Nick made many bespoke pieces over the years and one of his favourite commissions was a charm bracelet for children’s author Jill Murphy.

Jill commissioned Nick to make several of her ‘The Worst Witch’ drawings as three dimensional charms and Nick was later commissioned to make a bespoke necklace for Jill's birthday by her publishing house Puffin.

It’s often difficult to find the perfect gift for that special someone in your life or a keepsake to commemorate that memorable occasion.

If you can’t find what you are looking for, the chances are it hasn’t even been designed or made yet. You may even be looking for a special piece of jewellery for yourself.

So if you have a good idea for a design or are happy to leave the entire process in the competent hands of the brick and bean team, a commission is probably just the answer.

Bracelet commissioned by children's author - Jill Murphy

We have designed and made pieces for marriage proposals, wedding rings, to celebrate the birth of a baby, birthdays, christenings, graduations, anniversaries and a touching collection of jewellery in the memory of loved ones.  We have also been commissioned to make charms and cufflinks using sketches drawn by clients children.

Personalise your jewellery with hand engraving

You may already have your heart set on a piece of jewellery from the online collection but would love to add a personal touch.

Why not personalise your gift by commissioning us to hand engrave a name, date or saying of your choosing.  Sometimes it is possible to engrave on to the actual item or if not there is nearly always the option of adding a hand-engraved tag to your favourite piece.

We offer a hand engraving service of £5 per character

Please get in touch to enquire about hand engraving further.

Personalised charms
If you’re stuck for ideas, bespoke charms may be just what you are looking for.

Charms can be especially made to reflect the individual personality and interests of the wearer making a wonderful piece of personalised jewellery bringing joy for many years to come!

A charm bracelet is a timeless piece of jewellery that can be adapted or added to during its lifetime. You could opt for a complete bracelet, a necklace with charms, individual charms on their own to add to an existing bracelet or a starter bracelet (for perhaps a child) with one charm; something that you can add to over the years..

(We are currently working on designs for a collection of charms to buy directly from the website – so keep having a peek in the online shop!)
Please contact us to discuss any ideas that you may have for personalised charms or charm bracelets.

"How does the process of a commission start?"
The process of a commission is an organic one that evolves during this unique experience and is tailored to the needs of each individual client.

In the first instance, please contact us (by email, telephone or post) to discuss any ideas that you may have or please email any photographs or sketches.

When we have all of the desired information, the next stage is for us to draw a design or designs based on the clients information, this process can take anything from a few days to a week. This drawing is then sent to the client (often by email) for approval and a price (or a choice of priced options depending on any variables).

"How long does it take to make my bespoke jewellery or item?"

Due to the unique process of a commission, there is no set time. However, we would say that it is a good idea to allow a minimum of 4 - 8 weeks before you need your bespoke item.

Some commissions are fairly straight forward and some commissions require several weeks of designing, sketching and communicating with the client before we can even begin the design in metal.

If you have left your gift idea a little bit last minute and do need something sooner, please give us a call as we will always do his very best to help!

"How much will my commission cost?"

Due to the complex process of making a commissioned piece the cost can vary greatly and each commission is quoted for individually.  Pricing is affected by the amount of research, design work, craftsmanship and of course choice and weight of precious metals involved in making each individual piece.

It is always helpful to have a budget in mind. Occasionally it is impossible for us to make the clients preferred piece within their budget but this can normally be easily resolved by making a simpler design or one which uses less precious materials. For example, the cost of a simple, plain ring in silver will be considerably less expensive than the equivalent in say platinum.

Due to the extra work involved in making a one-off piece, the price of a commission is often higher than jewellery in the online collection or in our stockists.

Some commissions are fairly straight forward and some commissions require several weeks of designing, sketching and communicating with the client before we can even begin the design in metal.

When we have all of the necessary information, the next stage is for us to draw a design or designs based on the clients groundwork, (this process can take anything from a few days to a week.)

Once a design has been approved we can begin making.

If you’re interested in commissioning a bespoke design,  please contact the brick and bean team with your initial ideas and preferably an idea of your budget for your custom-made piece.

"How do I pay for my bespoke piece of jewellery and is a deposit required?"

When everyone is happy and the final design and the quote is agreed - work on your unique piece can begin!

When we are about to start work on your bespoke jewellery, a 50% non-returnable deposit of the full cost is required.  Payment can be made online, by money transfer, cash or cheque. If paying online, we can set up a voucher for online payment and then email a direct link to it.

The remainder of the balance is required only when we are nearing completion of your commission with payment prior to posting of your item.  Again, payment can be made online, by money transfer, cash or cheque.

"I'd like to organise a commissioned piece for a special someone but I want it to remain a secret, can this be done?"

Yes absolutely!  We are used to working 'undercover' and have done on many special requests.

All we need to do is ensure is that we have a way of keeping in touch with you either by phone, text, email or post.

Please make sure that we are aware of your 'secret mission' and we will promise to be discreet with our emailing, use plain envelopes and we promise not to leave a message on your answerphone!  We do need to put a senders address on the back of the envelope but we can handwrite our PO Box address and exclude our name and logo stamp.

"How will I know when to expect my commission?"

Nearly all of Nick Hubbard Jewellery is posted using Royal Mail’s Special Delivery service.  This service is insured, trackable and guaranteed for next day delivery before 1pm (Monday – Friday and we can even arrange delivery on a Saturday too.)  When we have requested payment of your balance it means that your commission is almost complete and will be posted out shortly.

If you need to know the exact date of delivery, please get in touch and we will be able to let you know when your jewellery is on its way! The Special Delivery service requires a signature on receipt so please ensure that you provide us with a suitable postal address to save you a trip to the sorting office!
"Can commissioned items be returned for a refund?"

The Brick and Bean team take great time, care and consideration to ensure that our client is fully happy with the commissioned item before we start work at the jewellery bench and the many images of work online allow the client to have a feel for the way in which their commissioned piece will be crafted.

As a bespoke piece is created specifically for the receiving person it wouldn’t be appropriate to offer it for sale so unfortunately a refund is not available on any commissioned or personalised item.

"I have no idea what I would like….can you help?"

We are very good at asking the right questions to inspire the perfect piece.  Nick and the team have been commissioned to design and make many bespoke items over the years and we are often asked to complete a commission with very little input from a client.
